Budget 2026: Fix the Basics. Invest in the Frontline.

DR
25 Feb 2026

Our alternative budget proposals for 2026-27 set out a clear alternative to Labour.

For too long, Labour have allowed visible decline to take hold. Roads have deteriorated. Anti-social behaviour has risen. Streets have become dirtier. Residents report issues repeatedly and see little improvement. Our budget focuses resources where it is needed by investing in the people and services that actually make a difference on the ground, while also ensuring we are also rebuilding Brent’s reserves to protect against future shocks.

£31.5m for roads and pavements

The backlog in repairs has grown year after year. Rather than steady investment to prevent decline, Labour have allowed the problem to escalate.  The total cost to repair all “red status” roads in Brent would be £44m today.

The figure for pavements is £300m.

Labour have absolutely no plan to tackle this.

We would start by investing £30m of Strategic CIL into resurfacing critical roads in growth areas, and £1.5 million into the borough-wide reactive repairs team.

£2.6m to clean up our streets and tackle anti-social behaviour

Our proposals would increase funds for cleaning, enforcement and regeneration overall, as well as including more targeted increases designed to tackle the specific challenges you tell us about week in, week out.

In particular we would install 1000 new bins, increase street cleaning, give people the choice to switch from a Blue Bag to a Blue Bin, cut the cost of large items collections, hire two new officers dedicated to enforcing proper standard on HMOs, and provide a specific fund to tackle the illegal use of fireworks in the Borough.

The proposals also include funding 12 apprenticeships for Brent’s Young people.

£1m investing in climate responsibility

We continue to support targeted climate investment — focusing on practical measures that reduce emissions, improve energy efficiency and future-proof local infrastructure — saving the council money which in future years can be reinvested.

We would also reinstate the dedicated Trees budget to ensure the proper maintenance of our current trees and a significant new programme of planting.

Saving £500,000 by cutting unnecessary spending

Residents expect the council to prioritise services that matter to them. That’s why we are cutting unnecessary bureaucracy — with a focus on unnecessary positions and excessive Special Responsibility Allowances, and cutting Brent magazine entirely — which is little more than a Labour propaganda sheet. When did you last see a non-Labour Councillor in this Council-funded magazine?

Combined these cuts would save half a million pounds - money which we could invest directly into frontline services
