Join our campaign to Fix Brent's Parking Problems
Residents & their visitors can’t park near their home, bin lorries can’t access their streets, contractors can’t properly maintain verges and collect fly tipping. And in at least one case an ambulance couldn’t make it to the correct address, putting patient safety at risk.
Labour's parking policies — or lack of them — have led to chaos on Brent's streets, and it's time we put it right.
Cllr Charlie Clinton said:
“Liberal Democrats are determined to tackle both pollution and climate change, and reducing our dependence on cars is a part of that. But many people will always need a car: people with disabilities, many families with kids, tradesmen, taxi drivers, driving instructors, musicians like myself, and many more.
Despite this simple fact, thanks to Labour's London-wide policy, thousands of new homes are being built with no parking, a problem amplified by our Labour Council's failure to provide alternatives. Labour are locking people who need a car out of many of these new homes, and in places like Alperton with minimal parking restrictions, causing chaos on neighbouring streets. Their approach not only negatively impacts people's lives - it also fuels opposition to both house building and net-zero policies.
As ever Labour have missed the point. In their rush to appear green, they are taking the oversimplistic approach of saying “no” to any cars, when they should be encouraging the shift to electric cars, in combination with improved public transport, better managed sharing schemes and more active travel routes - while also looking after their own local residents.
Lib Dems will continue to fight for a fair green future that works for everyone - including those who need a car."
Liberal Democrats are calling for Brent Council to:
- Work with Developers to incentivise more private parking, more space for car & cycle sharing schemes, and to ensure no further public parking spaces are lost without replacement.
- Improve public transport — in particular calling for more carriages on the Piccadilly line to reduce car usage by commuters and visitors.
- Consult all residents of Alperton on CPZs as soon as possible — so everyone is given a choice.
- Ensure any CPZs that are installed are run purely for the benefit of residents, and are never used to raise extra profits to balance the books.
- Continue investing in sustainable travel options, while minimising any loss of viable car parking bays to shared bicycle bays.
